ALL ABOUT SMALL STEPS REHAB

Small Steps Rehab stands as the sole Nurse Case Management company in the DMV area of Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. that is dedicated exclusively to serving the

Spanish-speaking injured worker. Our compassionate nurses not only speak Spanish but also comprehend the cultural beliefs that can influence recovery.

Consider the example of pain medication usage. Many injured workers express resistance, stating, “No soy de pastilla” or “I don’t like taking medication.” They have been misinformed that medications are detrimental to the body and they must be educated about the necessity of short-term pain control to manage physical therapy and recovery.

We also educate clients about the distinction between Tylenol (the preferred pain medication among many Hispanics) and anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen. Additionally, we ensure that the injured worker understands that Motrin and Advil are simply brand names for Ibuprofen.

However, relying solely on an English-speaking nurse without an interpreter at a provider’s office can overlook crucial concerns that may significantly impact the claimant’s recovery. Using an interpreter instead of bilingual nurse case manager can also be problematic as they are interpreting words, but cannot advocate for the claimant in the appointment.  If I went to a mechanic in China, I would not want just an English interpreter, but someone who was also a car enthusiast who would know what questions to ask the mechanic on my behalf.

This is the difference between a skilled trained nurse case manager and an interpreter, and why they are not interchangeable.
